Playing in the closet again

So, I have a few events coming up and the weather has shifted from 90's to the 60's. I certainly want to break out with the fall attire but I am not quite ready for fall's moody color palette. I like soft gray because it's light and airy with white and lightens up black I decided to work with a few new items:

  • Gray Old Navy Rockstar jeans
  • Silver and beige Vera Wang Ballet flats
  • Fit and flare black and white dress
  • Blue & Gray sleeveless Simply Vera tee
I also thought this would be a great exercise today because DH's birthday is Sunday, I am going to a party tomorrow night, and I'm attending an evening reception at the Art Institute in the next few weeks. These are my favorite outfits I came up with. I can't really call this a capsule as the inspiration for some of these outfits come directly from or were inspired by my Pinterest boards. No make up in any of the pics ( I hope I don't scare anybody ;-)) Let me know what you think.

BTW #16 is going to the party tomorrow. I twisted my ankle slightly earlier this week so standing around and dancing in heels is not going to work.

Love the new grey jeans in all iterations. The outfits with the floral tank are gorgeous too--it seems to go with everything! Your party outfit looks perfect. I like the version with the black jacket as well but the denim one definitely seems more fun/casual for dancing. Hope the ankle feels better :)

#16 is perfect for the party. But I am sorry about your ankle! Hope it feels better soon.

Fun exercise and it is capsule like in its effects, with all the soft greys, whites, and other soft neutrals. #2 and #6 are standouts in very different ways. Will you wear #6 to the art institute? I also really like #7 and #8.

Fantastic outfits! I have the same/almost the same top as the one you're wearing in #1, and I have all the elements to put together #12, so....I will be copying those outfits! Hope your ankle feels better soon.

These are great. I'd like to add #12 as worthy of special attention!

  • deb replied 11 years ago

I love #14. And woman, you do not need makeup!

  • Ingunn replied 11 years ago

Ok. You are making this so hard. I can't pick a favorite! The grey jeans are going to become workhorses, I'm sure. I love the addition of the red skirt and green pants to this quite subdued collection. you also know how to twist and turn collars, belts etc to make each outfit a winner. This is great work! I hope your ankle is better soon, and that the party will be awesome!

Gorgeous - #8 is too fab.

  • Day Vies replied 11 years ago

Ingunn - First off, Happy Birthday! I hope it's a wonderful fun-filed day.
I think you're right about the gray jeans they are going to be worn happily and often. The skirt is actually a really bright orange I thought it was an interesting combination. The green jeans are my camo jeans in reverse! How fun is that?! #12&#13 are directly inspired by this picture on pinterest.

Kellygirl - I think the floral tank is going to be another workhorse. I love the blue in the background of that tank. It is a cerulean blue and pops so nicely against the neutral flowers.  Outfits 8-10 just came together so easily I didn't really think about it.

Suz - #2 is a variation of an outfit from my fall  capsule. #6 is a version of this outfit from pinterest. #6 is a contender for the Art Institute. I think it will depend on my mood that day. 4,6,8,12, and 14 are contenders for that event. 8 was definitely one of my impromptu favorites because of the organic feel of the jacket with the water color effect of the tee. I'm glad you pointed out your favorites I value your eye/ style perspective.

Karie - I can't wait to see, you have to send me a PM when you do. I literally lifted #12 right off of Pinterest and I think that was the exact comment I wrote when I pinned it. My ankle will be fine. I had a severe soft tissue ankle injury 7 years ago. I know when I've tweaked it I just need to pamper it for the next 2 weeks or so -- then it will be back to heels. Wedges and flats work better in the meantime because it's unstable.

Cobaltblue -- #12 must be a magic formula it's getting the most votes.

Deb -- you are so sweet to say I don't need makeup. Maybe I don't but I certainly like it ;-)

Caro - I know you play around with proportion and lines a lot and I find it interesting given the difference between you and Suz's styles that you both like #8. I'm really happy with that one it does have this boho polished-ness to it.

  • Lantana replied 11 years ago

You have such a sure hand at putting outfits together, DayVies. It's always a treat to see.

  • In My Joi replied 11 years ago

I love your sense of style DV! All of the combinations work well, I second Deb, # 14 is my fav!
    P.S. You look great w/o make-up! ;)

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

What a versatile capsule! I love them all, but #14 is my favorite! You look lovely with your polished makeup, but it's so nice to see your natural face too--you look so fresh and dewy!

  • jlyns replied 11 years ago

I agree with Suz on #6!  I immediately thought that this was the art institute outfit!  You are the definition of elegance in it!

  • lyn* replied 11 years ago

I think you do natural makeup very well - I am pretty sure "no makeup" is a myth - I scare people (including ER docs) when I show up without makeup at all - haha; I think that's why they stop paging me after I take off my makeup :p

I really love the fit and flare style on you (of course I would, style twin). #9 is one of my favorite looks for sure - your red skirts are so pretty!

  • dakotacheryl replied 11 years ago

    Wowsa...simply divine !!

Love the grey jeans, the red skirt, the striped dress...oh well, really all of your looks!!

  • unfrumped replied 11 years ago

These are all great looks and with lots of variations for your different events. . I love the gray jeans and your mix of neutrals. And, I don't think there's a color out there you can't wear. Amazing.

  • cheryl replied 11 years ago

These are all fantastic. You look wonderful in all but #14 is my favorite :)

  • replied 11 years ago

I need to sit down and take some deep breaths after looking at your photos DV! Stunning! The colours are all playing together so well and I love little touches like pearls with the snake booties in #5 and the pop of orangey/red with your skirt. I find your casual outfits inspiring (great ideas for my lifestyle ;))and your dressy outfits equally fab. I agree about #6, that would be lovely for the Art institute evening... love the clutch.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    Aren't you clever.

An extra shout out for #2, #4, #8, #11 and #16, as extra killer. Take care of your ankle. xo

  • Adelfa replied 11 years ago

This is a great capsule! I agree with Ingunn, the addition of the extra color makes things really special. My love is THAT DRESS--wow! In all the variations.

  • Day Vies replied 11 years ago

Lantana - you know when I think about it I learned this from my Mom (yes blaming it all on mothers ;-) ) She would spend Saturday morning mixing and matching her new favorite pieces, while she played her new favorite songs. Now she never took pictures but I'm pretty sure she had a mental note on each combination she liked. I'm just doing the same.

Joi - I love #14 it's the fit and flare. The shock of coral is nice. Oddly the belt came with the dress. I probably never would have put the jacket and dress together had it not been for my fit and flare muse Lyn*.

GP -Thank you! I once sat next to a lady on the bus when I was about 14 and she told me that one day I would be grateful for dewy (read oily skin) perhaps maybe now I am.

Jlyns- I really hadn't made up my mind before I posted but it's really looking like #6 is going to the Art Institute event. I think it will work since a PR firm is hosting the event.

Lyn - you were definitely the inspiration for #14. I was so happy to find that dress because rarely can I just buy a dress off the rack and have it fit perfectly.

DianeG- I like making casual outfits best only because I am usually at a loss. I usually always have to ask myself how are people wearing that?

Angie - the ankle is elevated and I've been wearing flats.

No 14 is the hot ticket. It is extremely flattering. And the trousers in 6, 7, and 8 really elongate, a great cut for you.
