Tried it anyway and won!

Today I am wearing a most perfect blouse. Normally, I would not go for a sheer button-front blouse with pockets at the bust. I just couldn't resist the snake print called out to me and I picked up the blouse in gray/white and beige/cream. It doesn't slide around as I anticipated and the pockets aren't distracting at all. Score 1 for team try it anyway.

Tonight I have class. I prefer to dress for class simply because of who I could run into on the way there and to impress upon my instructors (who are practitioners) that I am a professional. And speaking of professionals I now have a long-term temp assignment that starts Monday. Back to daily outfit posts :-) YAY! My assignment is the perfect place to park myself for my last semester of my masters program, rack up experience in my specialty and await the all important bar results due out in less than two weeks.

Have any of you "tried it anyway" when it came to a piece of clothing that "common sense/experience" predicted wouldn't work?

GORGEOUS, you beautiful woman, you. I love your attitude as much as your outfit. Try it anyway is a fab motto. Because you never know. This looks wonderful on you. The subtle pattern and vertical stripe is what is noticeable, not the pockets.

    Congrats on the job!

  • Vildy replied 10 years ago

I love this look. Good for you for testing it for yourself.

  • Vildy replied 10 years ago

Ah! I see Suz not the biggest fan of the shirt pockets. I very much like them.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Vildy -- I am not a fan of shirt pockets either. I wish they would leave them off they seem to be everywhere. But as Suz pointed out, the snake print and vertical pattern help to obscure them.

Suz - You are so right about the vertical stripes and subtle pattern. The pockets just disappear. I am also loving the fact that I can wear this blouse tucked or untucked. Normally I live in fear or looking VERY short-waisted but magic blouse has erased those fears, at least for now.

  • Ginkgo replied 10 years ago

You look elegant as always, Day Vies. Love the subtle interest the snakeskin pattern provides over plain ole' white.

    Congratulations on the job!

  • DonnaF replied 10 years ago

This looks fab on you!  The pockets are high enough, they don't have buttons, and the pattern is matched up.  Great find!

And thanks to you, yes you, I finally tried the VC tube skirts.  The online instruction to size down was a total fail.  I'm usually a P2 in skirts, and the PXS was tight beyond tight, showed every bump and bulge, and I could hardly walk.  So I ordered PS, but the pattern that came was not what was pictured.  I kept it anyway, as I am going on a long road trip with an art gallery/museum visit after four hours of driving so I wanted to wear something presentable in the car.  I think it looks fairly good despite my saddlebags, and I had Nordstrom take in the waist as it was huge on me.  I have to find light so I can take pics. . . I might try ordering again to see if they will actually send what I order.

YLF. I love this on you. I agree with you - sometime just try something it may work. Vickie

  • Niefern replied 10 years ago

Great blouse, excellent decision to try it.

  • Sara L. replied 10 years ago

This blouse looks great on you.  I agree with Suz that the subtle stripes are what is noticeable, not the pockets (which never bother me, but then I have pretty much the opposite body shape from you).  I generally take a bunch of stuff into fitting rooms to try because I'm never quite sure what will look okay and what won't.  Some items that look terrible on the hanger can look wonderful when on a real person.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Ginkgo - I have simply fallen in love with snake prints and had it not been for the print I don't think I would have ordered this. Also plain old white in a sheer top would never have made it into my closet. Thank goodness for print. I don't think I would have said that pre-YLF.

DonnaF -- I am so glad you tried the VC tube skirt! I did have to read your comment twice and wonder did she really mean me? I'm glad I was able to help get you over the hump and that you had the skirt altered by Nordstrom's. You must post pictures -- I'd love to see it before or after the car ride :-).

This is great! I'm trying to think... there are probably a ton of outfits that I thought were iffy for work but wore anyways... that may not be the same thing.

  • Echo replied 10 years ago

I love this blouse on you! Snake print isn't my thing, but I love the subtle variations in this top and the vertical print. I also really love your philosophy of dressing and trying things that we might normally reject with one look and breaking "rules" that keep us all in a box. I look forward to your daily WIW posts again!

  • Wendi1984 replied 10 years ago

I think it looks beautiful on you! I'm glad you tried it! :-)

I have a dress (actually a maxi dress - don't boo me!) that has horizontal stripes. They are about 1" wide. I was nervous about trying it on because I'm a curvy hourglass with a bit of extra "fluff" in the tummy, hips, and lower back. I grew up hearing that people who are heavy should never wear horizontal stripes. But I tried on the dress and loved it! And I get lots of compliments whenever I wear it. It's versatile, and I style it in different ways. Best of all, it washes easily and feels as comfy as wearing a nightgown.

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Perfect!  You just never miss a mark when it comes to color and proportion.  There is never an extraneous detail, and you make it look so easy.  I think the blouse is well-designed, as the pockets are higher up which lifts the eye up towards your face instead of the pockets being smack dab in the middle of you-know-where.

I'll have to think about your question.  More often than not, things I *think* will work, actually don't.  I think my endless optimism when it comes to fashion (yes!  I'll take that trend too!) keeps me passionate about my favorite hobby.  But I don't mind when I'm wrong, it simply serves to instruct me.

Congratulations on your new job!  I love the positive way you are looking at your temp assignment -- as something offering potential -- rather than feeling down about having a "just a temp job" which usually means no benefits, etc.

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

LOVE LOVE LOVE!  You look super-fab!  And heartiest congratulations on the job!

Yes, I am all for the "try it anyway" philosophy.  That's how I ended up with my striped Vince Camuto midi skirt, which I just love!

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Another fabulous outfit! Yes, I have "tried it anyway" - most recently with the VC tube skirt. Pre-YLF, I NEVER would have worn such a form-fitting skirt, but I tried it and loved it.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Killer outfit and effort. Good job dressing up for class. xo

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 10 years ago

Here's to bravery and having it pay off! Looking forward to daily posts...

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Fab outfit & attitude :) :) LOVE snake print.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

You are brave besides beautiful and brainy. I had to go back to look for shirt pockets because I just didn't see them. I'm thrilled for you having the perfect assignment for now. You have worked hard and deserve it.

  • Mochi replied 10 years ago

Lovely. Great that you're so poised for a lot of great things happening for you now.

  • deb replied 10 years ago

Congratulations on the job! Love the blouse and you look very professional.

  • FlorenceFearne replied 10 years ago

That snakeskin is so gorgeous on you. Very classy. Also, had to mention your fab hair! I love that! It's tough for me to tell exactly how you've got it pulled back, but I'm such a fan of the juxtaposition between the sleek pulled back bottom, and then the curly volume on top.

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

This looks fab. The blouse is great. Your right, it's important to keep an open mind, and try things on. What's the worst that can happen, you won't like it, and won't buy it.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

You look absolutely radiant and this blouse is all kind of awesome, pockets and all.
At least a third of my closet Is a result of "try it anyway" motto :-)

Congratulations on the position! Yay to more WIW posts too!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

You look stunningly beautiful DV. This blouse is perfect.

    Congrats on the job!

  • replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous blouse, and congrats on the job!

  • MsLuna replied 10 years ago

    Beautiful!!!!

  • Eliza replied 10 years ago

Day Vies- you look amazing! That shirt is great. Love your motto- Try it any way. Duly noted. YLF has encouraged me to try a lot of new things. It is so fun when a new door opens.

You radiate so much positive energy. Should serve you well as you navigate your transition.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Congratulations on the job! I try almost anything anyway but not with such gorgeous results.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Oh, yes, I believe in "Just Try it Anyway," at least in the dressing room.  Sometimes, but not always, I'm pleasantly surprised.  This is a beautiful outfit.  I think the low contrast in the print and the pocket helps streamline things.

I'm also a believer in dressing for opportunity!  Hope your class went well, and I'm glad to hear you have a good temp gig.  I did my share of admin temping when I lived in NJ and studied/auditioned in NYC regularly.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Rachy -- I am sure that counts. Going with iffy is always better than talking yourself out of an outfit.

Echo -- I am all about breaking my own rules -- it wasn't always like this. Before YLF I lived in my little box and I liked it.

Wendi1984 - I completely support you on the horizontal striped. I had my own revelation earlier this year. I've tried on those horizontal striped maxi dresses they ARE quite flattering. The pattern tends to flatten out the curves on the Z axis and emphasize the cute curves on the X/Y axis. That's just my theory thought.

CocoLion - that is such a positive view on experimentation - if we don't experiment we don't learn.

MaryK - I am so not surprised to learn that you are on team "try it anyway". I loved your Pinspiration outfit for that skirt.

Karie - Another enthusiastic recruit for team try it anyway.

Joy - the mere fact that you didn't see the pockets the first time is just the effect I was going for. I'll take beautiful and brainy complements any day :-)

Mochi -- that is exactly the way I feel, as if there are a lot of things happening right now that are preparing me for the place I've been trying to get to for the past 5 years. (A complete career transition from HR to Law)

FlorenceFearne - I took one of those hair bands doubled it up around my head. I pulled my hair back from my hairline a little in the front and a lot on in the back. It has the effect of looking like a fancy up-do when it's really a loose lop-sided ponytail.

Kkards -- absolutely, in the dressing room the worst that could happen is you hate it, the best that can happen is you love it.

Sveta - Before YLF I was not the biggest fan of animal prints. So many of the ladies have a snake printed something so I've warmed up to prints since joining the forum. I would never have believed that so much of your closet is try it anyway if you hadn't written it. Your outfits are so effortlessly chic.

Eliza - navigate is definitely the key word for recent events.  I just can't wait to get to the other side already.

Shevia -- your outfits are so varied and inventive I can't believe your "try it anyways" don't work out regularly.

Beth Ann -- its a full circle moment for me being in a temp role my first position in HR was as a permanent placement consultant (headhunter). It's funny to be on the receiving end of services.

  • In My Joi replied 10 years ago

Great strategy, it looks great on you- the pockets do lose significance in the print!
    Congratulations!!!

  • Ingunn replied 10 years ago

Dv, you are a role model when it comes to being positive. It makes my day better just to read your posts, and even more so seeing how wonderful you look in something that "shouldn't work". It sounds like everything is folding itself out in your favor right now - congratulations!

  • goldenpig replied 10 years ago

DV, you look fantastic. I love the snake blouse on you! Of course you can break the "rules" because you always look great!

I am big on trying new things too. What's the worst that can happen? A chuckle and then move on!

  • Lantana replied 10 years ago

Day Vies I've read all the responses about the perfect blouse and agree 100% so I will content myself with sounding a cheer for your choice of shoes. I think they are perfect too.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Lantana - you're right, no one mentioned the shoes. I love a pair of peep toe pumps! They are a lovely soft pink with black trim. I hadn't worn them in a good long while.

GP - excellent philosophy. What is the worst that could happen?

Ingunn - I seem to be winning against should not's lately. The tide is a-turning!

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous!  You look amazing, and I am so glad for the temp assignment.  *fingers crossed* for you ont he bar exam!

  • Jenava replied 10 years ago

I know you already have so many compliment, but I just had to chime in to say this is one of my favorite outfits of yours.  The top is killer, but that SKIRT.  I want one.  It's divine.
