Casual my way

A few weeks ago (maybe a couple months ago?)  we had a really lively conversation on the forum about what is casual. Rachylou wisely pointed out during this post that there are "normal people" and there are "fancy people" and that fancy people tend not to wear "the uniform".

I have been working on my casual style this week. Because I have casual pieces they just tend not to look very casual when I wear them. I certainly have no intention of looking or promoting frumpy, but I do want develop and maintain a casual look that is me, but looks approachable. So here's the last of my casual looks for this week. Let me know what you think!

I am wearing:
  •  a BR military style jacket
  • an old navy boat neck tee
  • dark wash skinnies from Target
  • Minty green converse all stars

Of course you look fantastic, DV!  I swear, you are always fab. Always. I love how the mint converse keep it modern and stylish.  Very approachable, very casual, and yet still worthy of the fabulousness that is you!

Looks awesome. I love the minty Cons in this. Casual but polished and sassy!

FABULOUS! So fresh with the aqua sneaks.

Love it!  You always carry a sense of polish -- but this is very relaxed and easy, and would "blend" well with the yoga pant / flip flop crowd.  The fact that you're wearing sneakers is "casual" the fact that they're cool aqua?  Well, that's DV style.

Day Vies, I don't recall ever having seen you in *denim* denim! I'm seeing classic on the top and party on the bottom with those mint Cons. Love them on you. I tried on a pair the other day and they looked like the clodhoppers I was expecting : )

Day Vies- I like your way and how great that you are so clear about what it is.

I like your way of doing casual. This outfit looks great on you--nicely put together, but also relaxed. Love the mint sneakers!
  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago
Well Beth Ann you know I like my color -- there's no separating me from that!

    YLF! A terrific casual outfit!

You look freakin' amazing!!! I LOVE this and want to copy it. That jacket has more than earned its place in your closet!! As you said in another post - a great buy! And what absolutely makes this outfit, to my eye, are the minty sneakers. What an inspired casual look.

You are SO polished at all times! Not sure how you do it. This is definitely very you! You look great!

This is just so adorable. Love the aqua.

ETA: can you check the link to the old conversation? I wanted to read it but the link didn't work.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago
Scarlet - Thanks for letting me know about the link. It should be working fine now :-)

Your way of casual is exquisite.

I think shoes set the level on the casual-formal continuum and also bring in references to style templates other than classic/traditional (or add those in where wanted!)

Love this, DV! I have been practicing casual looks as well.  It's harder than it seems, sometimes, isnt' it?
The stripes with skinnies and mint Cons is super fresh and perfect for Spring.  YLF!

I hope to try and emulate you a little as I struggle with casual. I love this DV version of casual! It totally works and another vote for the aqua sneeks, fab! as is your jacket :)

Great way to look casual with style and flair!

Casual yet well put together and those mint green Cons are awesome!  You are far from frumpy, that's for sure.
  • RandomThoughts (Andrea) replied 10 years ago
Super! I adore this outfit. You look like you know what's goin' on! :)
  • dlb1960 replied 10 years ago

All of the above plus you have the most beautiful smile

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago
I really love the flash of mint with your earrings and shoes!
That jacket is FABULOUS  in the neutral colour, and the fit is spot-on.
Sometimes casual yet stylish is a tough one to do, and you have 'nailed it' here.
  • ElleH replied 10 years ago

Day Vies, you always look fab! This outfit is no different in that respect, it is just a casual version. You still look polished, attractive & well dressed, with casual items.

  • rae replied 10 years ago
You look just as good in casual wear as you do in your office clothes!
  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago
Krista -- yes, this casual thing is HARD. Trying to strike just the right balance is awkward at times. I can't say I have a "formula" just yet, but this one seems to work.
  • Krista replied 10 years ago
Yes it's all about the balance! I'm working on it, too. For me it's hard to refine the look because I only think about being casual on Saturdays, Sundays and the occasional weeknight.  Otherwise I'm at work and I feel like I've got that figured out already.  So, for me, sometimes it feels awkward still because the lack of opportunity ties into it as well.
  • Jaime replied 10 years ago
The mint touches are what takes this from very good to super great!
  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago
Krista - you hit the nail on the head! I have more time to dress casually now than I had in the past when I needed to look professional 4 days/week. Now I feel at a complete loss. It's like I'm trying to figure out who I am style wise for this area of my life.
