Event tonight and I need your help

So I was playing in my closet earlier this week in anticipation of a charity benefit I'm attending this evening. The event is a showcase of 8 dance troupes in my area benefiting DH's non-profit. I am torn -- I'd love to wear something edgier which based on my experience would be more than appropriate,  but I don't want to feel out of place.

Here are the two outfits I have in mind.

I am wearing in #1:
Cream silk blouse - Black House White Market
Black peplum jacket - Khol's
Camo skinnies - Target
Gold snake print pumps - Style & Co.

I am wearing in #2:
peplum top - Elle
Black and white floral skirt - Banana Republic

Tell me what you think!

I definitely like the first outfit better. Those camo skinnies look bangin on you! I'm not a huge fan of ruffles on shirts, so I personally would change that, but it looks great on you juxtaposed with the camo pants. Have fun tonight!

I like them both very much. Which one do you feel best in? Outfit 2 is certainly more conventional and mainstream. Outfit 1 is a statement. And I think your styling on that one is genius. You've taken the camo pants and dressed them up in an interesting, intentional and very stylish way. The feminine blouse, the jewelry and the shoes are spot on, and the jacket adds one more layer of polish. If dance troupe = arty crowd, I'd lean toward this one.

I think for something edgy, outfit #1 is better. I'm not sure about outfit #2 - I don't really like it; it's definitely not as fabulous as some of the ones you have been posting before. I think it's the pattern in the bottom half and then the contrast with the piping which is dark, but there is purple, and my eyes are confused.

    Have fun!

Based on the look alone, without knowing the typical dress code for such an occasion in your area, I vote for #2.  It is gorgeous.   The first one is very nice too and might look better for an evening with an artsy crowd.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

So far it looks like # 1 is in the lead. #2 is conventional and I've been leaning toward #1 -- we'll see what happens...

  • Susie replied 10 years ago

I prefer #1. Have you tried it with black shoes?

  • chewyspaghetti replied 10 years ago

I like them both and think both would be appropriate. If you want to go edgier, go for #1

  • replied 10 years ago

    I vote #1 too.

  • nancylee replied 10 years ago

I really like both outfits, but as many have said #1 is more trendy/statement and #2 is more conventional.

I vote #1.  It's a little edgier because of the camo pants, but still dressy modern classic when you consider the blouse and jacket.  I think Angie would say this is the perfect way to incorporate a trend.  Plus, it's an arty event.

    Have fun!

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Susie - I have black shoes -- but I think the gold ones add a little something more I love camo with white and gold I have pin on one of my pinterest boards that is the inspiration for this outfit and it includes gold.

Nancylee -- Love your analysis you're a great salesperson! I agree that Angie would probably say something similar.

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

Love #1. I assume this is a more urban, arty event, right? #2 reads more garden party/ ladies who lunch type of event to me.

  • Ingunn replied 10 years ago

I love both, but I prefer #1 for you. It is so fab! The juxtaposition of feminine and masculine is so fresh and current. Enjoy your evening!

  • MovingFashionForward replied 10 years ago

I so love #1 I'm thinking of copying it! Super-cool and fabulous!

OMG. I am so in love with # 1 I can hardly speak! Fainting with fuchsia crash helmet!!!

I have a lot of experience attending artsy events. I think this one is superb. As Nancylee said, on the top, you look classic and elegant. But you've incorporated the trend with sass. I would see you and right away know that you are smart, stylish, and fun!

The second outfit is extremely pretty and I like it also -- but I think for this event, the first one wins.

ETA I love the simple drop earring with the gold shoes, too. Subtle shine.

Going for edgy? I say #1 all day long! Perhaps a large jeweled statement necklace and smaller earring will tie in a touch of glam ;)

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Diana - yes it is an urban arty event it's benefitting a national AIDS organization so I think #1 is going to win hands down. I'll post pics of the finished look later tonight or tomorrow.

Sarah -- thank you! Just for you I'll post a link to the inspiration so you can see what inspired me. http://pinterest.com/pin/294211788127043041/

Ingunn -- I had originally picked this outfit for date night but date night actually happened earlier in the day than I anticipated so I was actually feeling a little sad that I would not get to wear this outfit. This is why I took to the forum to ask you ladies which outfit. I think it was a self-fulfilling prophecy I wanted to wear it for something -- Yay! I think #1 wins.

Suz - Good thing you were wearing a crash helmet I don't want you to hurt yourself :D. Yep, I'm convinced #1 is the way to go The arts are all about self expression and this is where I am today. Weeee! Have a look at the inspiration pic I'd LOVE to see your interpretation of a camo look. Could you work that into your Urban Prince look? (Challenge!)

Joi -- I like the suggestion. The jewelry will depend on how I decide to do my hair and my hair depends on the weather. I'm not sure what I will come up with something new or something tried and true.

  • Kristin L replied 10 years ago

I have to pick #1. You look amazing!

And was it you that brought up the rule about curvier ladies should stay away from small prints? I read an interesting article in Instyle this month talking about it.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Another vote for #1. An 11 out of 10. Have a fab night.

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

I adore #1. I grey camo skinnies and gold shoes, hmmm.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

K -- I brought the topic up on the forum but I was railing against the machine because I think the rule is stupid and maddening. I'll have to have a look at InStyle to read that article.

Angie -- to have your vote definitely means I'll wear #1 with confidence ;-)

Annagybe - I thought it was was an interesting combo too!

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

Late to the party, but I love #1! No contest between the two, IMHO. Hope you have a fab time.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Chicago Dance scene?  #1, oh yes, oh yes!  You had me at camo and ruffles.  Both are necessary!

#2 is perfectly lovely, of course, but you'll have more opportunities to enjoy its fabness!

  • cobaltblue replied 10 years ago

Another latecomer, but I had to stop and express my admiration for #1! I love the pristine, white ruffles with camo. And camo with gold!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Oooh! The challenge is on! Now I just have to buy every single one of those pieces, LOL!

Actually, I almost bought the camo jeans that Lisa got from NAS, but they didn't look good on me, alas.

I have to say I prefer your version to the original. Yours is more elegant!

  • Lori replied 10 years ago

If you're going for something really edgy, #1. The camo does it.  But if you're going for glam edge, go for #2.

  • unfrumped replied 10 years ago

Maybe for some other time, I wonder how the white blouse & black jacket look with the print skirt? I love the blouse and jacket combo.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

I'm ridiculously late chiming in - you're probably already at your event! You look fab in both but #1 blows me away!!!

  • Sheila replied 10 years ago

Hope you are enjoying your evening...late to the party but #2 is my favorite. You look amazing in that fuschia-violet top. Gorgeous.

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Love #1, especially based on what you say about the event. What is your husband wearing?

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Just another probably late vote for #1. I love it!

  • Echo replied 10 years ago

I am far too late to have any impact on your decision, but I just wanted to chime in that you look smashing in #1. I love, love, LOVE it! I hope you have a great time tonight!

  • alyssaisacat replied 10 years ago

Thank you so much for awarding me solution! *happy dance* yay my first badge thing! <3

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

I am late to the party, but I hope you picked #1!

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Just so that we're clear everyone,  #1 won by a landslide, that's what I wore and it really did strike just the right note and happened to be popular outfit with friends and acquaintances who saw me.

Suz -- I'm serious I'd love to see you dandify camo skinnies.

Unfrumped - I have not tried the jacket or blouse with that skirt. Something to play with.

Shannon - I am always pleased when I can blow you away. Yay! I'd love to see what camo + Urban Lady Prince looks like. I've already challenged Suz.

Sheila- Thank you! I adore that top -- I'd been searching for something in that color for a while and I think I am going to try it with a skirt that's similar but slightly longer.

Pil - DH wore a navy suit jacket, light yellow paisley tie, a french blue shirt with white collar and white french cuffs. His trousers were a gray glen plaid. To top it off he wore cherry brown shoes with a single monk strap. I have strongly influenced his wardrobe choices over the near 7 years we've been together, but I did not put together tonight's classic look -- he did that on his own. For the past 8 months he's really been impressing me with his outfit combinations.

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Your husband must have looked fabulous too - very snappy!

  • In My Joi replied 10 years ago

Wow! Sounds like you both were a hit!
