WIW 10.14.13

It's funny I've been in my current home for over 5 years and have never had a party. Preparing to have one this coming weekend took the entire weekend. DH was a big help going shopping with me and lugging all of out groceries and supplies up 2 flights of stairs. I guess this is the kind of outfit you wear when the spark inspiration is dimmed by scrubbing cleaning and chores :-) Shades of muted grays and purples rule the day.

Happy Monday!

I love it! We hosted Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and I was not able to come up with an outfit as fab as this!

The wrap style of the sweater is so flattering on you with the flared pants, and I think the sophistication of the outfit is actually amplified by the muted tones. Fabulous and I hope the party was a success!

What a beautiful soft colour palette. I love the way your satiny top looks like molten metal and the way it contrasts in texture with the soft knit is fab. You look great!

I didn't expect such elegance after reading about a work outfit and gasped when the thumbnail was opened. You could wear this to a party! The muted shades look just as great on you as brights and high contrast. Lovely.

    This is really pretty.

These colours remind me of the lovely blues and pinks coming down the spring runways...you are five steps ahead of the curve, even on a work day. And what a beautiful outfit!

Your inspiration doesn't look dimmed at all. Very lovely, and ditto the contrast of textures.

Krista - the big shindig is this coming weekend, party prep was this past weekend.
Diane -- you make a great point I hadn't considered. The tee is just a plain cotton tee not a satin shell at all (Simply Vera Wang) however the subtle tonal changes do suggest a finer material. I think the pattern is the textural contrast here. I hadn't thought about that detail as the contrast usually found in my outfits.
Joy -- that was my concern that I would not have the sharp contrast I'm used to but this works -- surprisingly.
Suz -  I guess with a few extra layers underneath I could wear this outfit through the winter and into the spring and be right on trend. I hadn't connected the tones to the 2014 Spring offerings. Thanks!
Ruby Redlocks - Now that's a name makes me happy just typing it. Thanks for commenting.

Day Vies- Thank you, I have enjoyed it as my online moniker for about a decade.
Originally I was going with Ruby Redslippers, (slight Wizard of Oz obsession) but after a quick web search found a porn actress by that name and decided plan b to avoid any confusion. It's stuck with me since.

    Really pretty and sophisticated.

Day--New member here, although I've been reading your posts for a few weeks. I, too, was expecting something completely different when I read about your day of scrubbing and cleaning. What a beautiful outfit with, as Suz pointed out, a fashion forward color scheme.
I've seen that lovely Vera Wang shirt at our local Kohl's and like it better on you, styled with the sweater. Actually, the soft pink and grey colors remind me of what I wore for my high school senior picture in the early '80s.
    Enjoy the freshly cleaned home.

Where are your ripped jeans and paint splattered top? That's what I'd be wearing on cleaning day. :) you look so pretty!

  • replied 10 years ago

DV I see it now that it's a shaded pattern on your top, but in #2 particularly it looks as though its a satin with the light catching it. Lovely effect.

  • Astrid replied 10 years ago

Such pretty colors! You look lovely.

Now -- tell me you didn't actually scrub in this!  This must be "apres-scrub," yes?

Love the soft tones on you, and your ability to blend cooler and warmer neutrals so harmoniously.  The bit of shine, paired with the long leg line is genius.

At least it's more fun to clean when you know it's for a celebration to come!

I would be right alongside Amy in my old jeans and t for the cleaning fest. You look fabulous in those shades of gray and blush - definitely a seasonless look. Love the crossover sweater - I am going to have to search those out and try one for layering after seeing it on you.

Ruby Redlocks -- I like "Redlocks" better anyway (and the story that goes with it). I have always adored red hair. Glenda the good witch had red hair ;-)
Angie - I think I'm always going for pretty when I wear softer shades. Nice to know I succeed.
Windchime - funny how some color combos are decade specific. During the mid 80's I loved pink gray and white outfits. Nice to know it still works nearly 30 years later. The scrubbing which still is incomplete covered Saturday and Sunday. I still need to scrub the fridge, baseboards, and the kitchen cabinets. We were just commenting last night on the need to entertain more if this is the only way we're motivated to do deep cleaning.
Amy -- I cleaned in something worse than ripped jeans at least they can be chic. Try a yellow Sesame Street tee, purple velor track pants and green flip flops ;-) (Fashion forward!)
Beth Ann - yes apres scrubbing. I'll remove these duds when the scrubbing continues this evening (The scrubbings will continue until morale improves! ;-)) This outfit looks more effortless than it was. Since I got these mauve khaki's I've been trying to fit them into a good outfit. This is about 1 year's worth of trial an error. (And on the final attempt she succeeds.)

Christianne -- I think you're right remove the sweater and this is a summer look. (the tank is sleeveless). I hadn't considered that before. Thank you!

Cleaning or not, a very sophiticated and muted color choice. Very pretty!

  • deb replied 10 years ago

    Pretty colors!

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

I can't believe you are old enough to remember the pink and grey 80s look, DV!  And in geometric shapes too...  In any case, this is a far cry from that although the colors do bring me back there!  Have you ever looked anything less than polished?

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

I thought MaryK could wear any colour, but - look - at - you (too). I love seeing these soft colours on you, even more so because I'd never imagine you'd wear them. And just how beautifully they suit you.

    Have a great party.

  • MuseumGal replied 10 years ago

Muted yes, but incredibly classy and sophisticated.

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

Haha...your real cleaning outfit sounds amazing :)

  • replied 10 years ago

This looks pretty inspired to me, I love it.  I'm sure all your pre-planning will pay off for the party.

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

Oooh; love the blush pink :3

  • K. Period. replied 10 years ago

Lovely! The outfit looks soft, elegant and luxurious. Perfect! (And yes, I AM envisioning you with a lovely elegant stem of bubbly something in your hand.)

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

YLF. Very pretty yet sophisticated colours.

  • Krista replied 10 years ago

Uh oh! Feeling silly! We had a long weekend for Thanksgiving this weekend and I was off today, hence why I thought your outfit was a weekend outfit. Sheesh! Maybe I need more time off?!? Your outfit is still awesome though and I hope the party is wonderful.... Next weekend when you actually have it! LOL! :)

  • Kristin L replied 10 years ago

You look amazing! I like the texture differences between the 2 tops.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

You truly are a color genius! Good luck with the party!

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Love the muted colors and draping. Cleaning and prep can be a deterrent for entertaining - I'm always running around at the last minute and without fail forget to put something out.
